When you talk with people of Churchill Downs, one thing comes to mind - the twin towers. Even people who do not watch horse racing on the track Churchill Downs and its twin towers because of the popularity of games such as Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks. The track also hosts the Breeders' Cup races on six occasions. What most people do not know the story behind the track and how the twin towers came to be.
The track is named after John and Henry Churchill. The two rented eighty four acres of land to their nephew, Colonel Meriweather Lewis Clark, Jr. Clark was the grand-son of the famous explorer William Clark. He was also chairman of the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association. Richard Ten Broeck was a horse breeder and trainer and the father of Clark. Broek is an experienced coach, regularly attending the English Derby at Epsom Downs in London. He was the man who introduced Clark to the world of horse racing.
Louisville has always had a love affair with horse racing. Indeed, it was home to Oakland and Woodlawn racecourse. If these two tracks, there was a gap in Louisville that need filling. Churchill Downs would be.
For some time, Churchill had a reputation of Thursday hall. Some modifications had to be equipped in 1893 and the track was sold to a syndicate, which was led by William Applegate. New changes have been made with the shortening of the runway and the introduction of the double arrow on the podium in 1895. A new tradition will be performed this year - the rigging of the Kentucky Derby winner in a crown of roses.
