Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is probably the most famous horses in the United States. It takes place in Louisville, Kentucky at Churchill Downs the first Saturday of May Also known as "Run for the Roses, the Derby is the first stage of the prestigious Triple Crown. It is two weeks later by the Preakness Stakes, then three weeks after the Belmont Stakes is the first Kentucky Derby was held in 1875 with Aristides the winner of the circle. It was first performed on a mile and a half, but in 1896, was reduced by a quarter mile and today. 1919 produced the first Triple Crown winner Sir Barton.

Throughout the history of the Derby, only three fillies have won the race: Regret in 1915, the real risk in 1980 and Winning Colors in 1988. Another Filly, Eight Belles made a spectacular 2008 in 2nd behind the favorite, Big Brown. Unfortunately, she broke both front ankles while cooling after crossing the finish line and had to be euthanized. This game little horse was the first to die during the Kentucky Derby. They will be honored at Churchill Downs in the Garden of the Kentucky Derby Museum on the runway. A magnolia planted in his honor, with his remains buried at the base. De La Troienne Stakes will be renamed for Eight Belles.
There are memorable rivalries in the Kentucky Derby, especially between swaps, a horse and the coast west of Nashua, an east coast favorite. This led to a match race during the year, not only between the two horses against each other, but the nation, the top two jockeys at the time also: Willie Shoemaker and Eddie Arcaro.
